At the IVF Va'a World Sprint Championships in Singapore, Christiane Pape of FRVS 1898 takes bronze in the single outrigger canoe – seven Frankfurt paddlers were at the start.
A great triumph for Frankfurt's outrigger canoeing on the other side of the world: at the IVF Va'a World Sprint Championships in Singapore's Marina Bay, Christiane Pape of Frankfurter Ruder- und Kanusportverein Sachsenhausen 1898 e.V. won the bronze medal. She took third place in the prestigious V1, the single outrigger canoe without a rudder, holding her own against extremely strong international competition.
Seven paddlers from Frankfurt at the sprint world championships
In total, the traditional club on the river Main was represented by a seven-strong delegation at this year's sprint world championships in Asia. Races were held in several age groups: 500 m in the single (V1) as well as 500 m, 1,000 m and 1,500 m in the six-person va'a (V6).

Va'a is the Polynesian name for outrigger canoes without a rudder. With every stroke, paddlers therefore have to steer the boat as well as drive it forward.
Strong performances throughout the team
Alongside Christiane Pape's medal, the club's six other athletes also delivered outstanding performances. In extreme climatic conditions they went head to head with the world's elite and finished in solid mid-field positions in a tightly packed field. Florian Späth came fourth in the Masters 40 Men final over 500 m in the V1.
A year of titles and medals
The board of FRVS 1898 is deeply impressed by the team's collective performance. That such a large group from the club's own ranks qualified for the world championships, kept pace near the top of the world there and has now returned to Frankfurt with a world championship medal underlines the excellent sporting work and the positive development of canoeing and outrigger canoeing at the club.

Earlier in the same year, athletes of the FRVS had already won titles and medals at the German Championships and the European Championships in this boat class.
