Obituary: Helmut Scholze

Helmut Scholze, born 16 May 1932 † 14 Oct 2020

The Frankfurter Ruder- und Kanusportverein Sachsenhausen 1898 e.V. mourns its long-standing and valued honorary member Helmut Scholze. He passed away on Wednesday 14 October 2020 at the age of 88.

Helmut Scholze joined our club as a canoeist on 16 March 1968. He was mainly active as a touring paddler and also paddled with his wife Uta in the double. He paddled many touring rivers at home and abroad. He was good friends with everyone and made many connections.

From 1972 to 1984 he supported the FRVS as treasurer, then served as deputy chair until 2004. Until two years ago he came regularly to the club's get-together. There he liked to tell of the old days and brought along the ordered canoe calendars at the end of the year. At members' meetings, too, Helmut was always there and made sure the formalities were observed.

After his beginnings at the FRVS he also got involved beyond the club at district and association level. Active in the Hessian Canoe Association since 1980, he held the office of district chair in the Rhein-Main district from 2000 to 2005. At the same time, he supported the association as treasurer from 1982, then served as president from 1988 and as honorary president from 1996. Through his responsible roles, Helmut Scholze decisively shaped and fostered canoe sport over 33 years, at club level as well as in the district and at state level.

For his exceptional commitment he received golden badges of honour from the Hessian and the German Canoe Associations and the silver badge of honour of the State Sports Federation of Hesse. Helmut was an important voice – not only in our club.

Until recently he still regularly attended touring-paddlers' meetings, the Main district's annual general meetings and Hessian canoe days.

Our deepest sympathy goes to his wife Uta and his relatives. We'll never forget you; in our hearts you'll always have a firm place!
