The Lahn defies Corona

Lahn

Space, the final frontier. We are writing the year 2021 in the FRVS logbook, and we're still wrestling with Corona.

Joking aside, it's slowly getting annoying, but a few fearless and fully vaccinated rowers ventured a touring trip on the Lahn. After short but intensive preparation, we set off on 9 July to Wetzlar. Boats on the trailer and, in pouring rain, off onto the A3.

Arrived in Wetzlar, the boats rigged up without rain, we put out onto the Lahn. We made brisk progress and enjoyed the nature around the Lahn. Sometimes even too brisk – rapids kept appearing and the cox had his hands full. One of the highlights of this day was the boat tunnel in Weilburg. After the dark and somewhat eerie tunnel, we'd already arrived at our first overnight camp, the YOUTH CAMPSITE in Weilburg. Idyllically situated, we pitched our tents between a youth disco and an ancient-history group.

On the second day we continued to Diez/Oranienstein. After breakfast and assigning the land service, we rowed still quite briskly on the „still“ empty Lahn. We were a bit afraid we'd have to share the space with lots of paddlers, but that wasn't the case. We kept meeting a few at the locks and had a nice chat. The nature impressed us greatly, especially the quiet, the animals and the little boat traffic. Arrived at our luxury camping resort with electricity, shower and mown lawn, we pitched our tents again and went for a tasty meal.

The last day took us to Nassau. Now the current also let us down and we had to „row“! No, all was well – the weather, the route, the mood and the togetherness. We managed this stretch too without any particular incidents and arrived in Nassau exhausted but happy. In Nassau we all treated ourselves to a tasty ice cream before heading home again.

For all who were there, here are a few great moments of contemporary history. Everyone else, unfortunately, won't get them:

• Youth campsite: shouts of „beer“ in the night.
• Campfire with mystical pull.
• No lock biscuits on the third day.
• Shrill screams in the bushes on the Lahn (Brise).
• Very big blue car, land service.
• Cold Lahn and swimming.
• Hendrik dismantling the tent (pop-up tent).
• Pushy swan

Oh, it was lovely as always, and we're already looking forward to the next adventures of the starship Enterprise FRVS.
