An eerily spooky night trip through Frankfurt – Funzelfahrt 2021

Illuminated boats at dusk

No, seriously, of course this eerily spooky fun had nothing whatsoever to do with the very serious and, at that time, still tense situation.

Freshly tested and observing the requirements in force at the time, we wanted to give our young athletes a little highlight again, at least outdoors, as far as conditions allowed.

Under the supervision of the water rescue service of the DRK Frankfurt, we then launched at the Rudererdorf in Oberrad/Sachsenhausen and, together with many other boats, set off for the grounds of the women's rowing club Freiweg on the Niederrad bank, about 6 river kilometres away.

Due to the pandemic, there was unfortunately no big barbecue and chat after the trip, as there used to be in the „old normal“. Instead there was a warm soup against the cold and a short award ceremony for noteworthinesses (someone will have to invent a new word for that) such as the furthest journey, the most prettily decorated boat, the most participants from one club and similar special features.

Our eerily spooky little-monster boat won a prize, a voucher from the event sponsor – Globetrotter from Frankfurt.

Since space at the destination was rather limited, we moved the minibus with the boat trailer for the return transport to another friendly club a little upstream. So after our warm farewell we had to paddle a bit more, and then after about 2 km load our boat ashore and onto the boat trailer with the help of some parents – the trailer we had brought there with our club minibus in the afternoon before the start of the Funzelfahrt to make the return transport possible.

Many thanks to the helping hands, to the mentors and the photographers.

Let's hope we'll have another lovely Funzelfahrt in 2022 too.

Come on by. The first time is always with someone alongside you.
